A Magical Huffalump Resides Here

My name is Ed, I am a programmer. Just another dude with another blog. I like MTG, Open Source (more towards FREE software). I like sports, and eventually I hope to do business and do good for the world in general. This blog is gonna be about Magic The Gathering. Decklists and snippets will be posted here. It may lead somewhere or nowhere, as with all things arcane, that was bloody obvious =)

Hunting the Black Widow Mouse

Like how.

Darn.

I caught about 30 and now I really need to score one I can't for the life of me catch one!!!

I am hanging in Derr Dunes though... maybe thats the problem.....

[20150819 22:45]

Whooo!!!!!!!

Dang.

I waited about 3 days (this being the third day I think) and before sitting in the Lagoon, I spent quite a few days in Derr Dunes.

So final verdict, Derr Dunes really really sucks for the Black Widow :p

Anyways I spent roughly 250? Wicked Gnarly probably less... I only know I had 3XX and now I have only 120 :p

But it was pretty good gold and I was trying to farm gold (which was partly why I was ok with sitting in Derr Dunes in the first place... but sitting there with SB+ soon got to me :p)

Anyways now for the rest of the map!

So my setup:

So my advise? If you are hunting the Black Widow mouse? Go to Lagoon and arm gnarled or wicked gnarled and be prepare to wait at least 3 days ! (well I put it at three days so you will feel better if it comes earlier :))

If that did'nt work out, my other plan was to go to the mountains and arm SB+, but thats really painful in terms of MHG, but it is supposedly the fastest. However I would spend a good week at the Lagoon before I tried that though. Just my opinion, please make yor own judgement calls, that is what makes MouseHunt fun afterall =D

Happy Hunting ppl!

The Labyrinth

Oh wow.

I have never been so early to post about and area.

And I kinda just randomly stumbled on it.

If you are like me kinda not so active on MH (compared to before), you might have missed this!

Well. That or you are not a frequenter of the forums. :p

Any ways if you haven't been there in a while, check out the thread on the Feedback Friday (how long it has been since i watched one of those lol) where Dave did some sort of announcement/update on an upcoming area!

I did a screenshot, but there are more details and I don't really want to steal his thunder :p

I'll update my huntings as usual once the area is out, in the meantime I am waiting for a very elusive black widow.....

[20150910 01:07]

THE LABYRINTH is OPEN!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately I have not really done my dues with the Fungal Cavern so I dun think I will be progressing there too soon :(

Anyways the news has been posted and this is a snippet!

First, I believe you need to purchase the key from the Carthographer

Which you can only do if you first have the crystal crucible!!!!

Which I do not have :(

Looks like i will have to grind through the Fungal Cavern first lol

For those that have the Crucible, have fun! I will do my catching up now! =D

Happy Hunting ppl!

[20151115 02:04]

Oki Doki here goes....

So what happened between September and Nowember?

I dunno. Seriously.

Well I vaguely remember I was at the Fungal Cavern. Got caught in a bad map where NOBODY was completing the map but I already started on a few.

It was a sad 1 or 2 weeks. Worse, the owner did not need the map at all, and only started it as she thought all scrolls must be opened!! I believe it was the treasure scrolls, where if you already got the L.E. trap for the year, you should actually keep it for the following year. I.E. it is not tied to the L.E. trap. It is the treasure Chest reward that is tied to the trap. I.e. if you got your chest this year, you have a chance of getting the L.E. trap from this year. Not last year, and if you open it next year, you still only got the chance of getting this years loot. Capish? Good.

Anyways, I thought she has'nt gotten the L.E. trap for this year and thought I was returning her a favor (she helped a bunch in an earlier map). And horrors. She did'nt need it, and the other leeches in the map were more interested in Fungal Cavern. So it was purely a leech map. It was sad.

I was sad.

Well... as sad as i can be about virtual mice. but yah it set me back a good bit in terms of time,

Still.

In MH, you are your own competitor.

So it was'nt all bad.

But there was nothing good :/

Anyways gripes aside. After that I was trying to get the Crystal Crucible as quickly as possible. As well as Shards. Then Halloween came along.

I was a little worried about the cost in gold. I have fallen so far behind in MH that the gold inflation has overtaken my ability to keep up. So I barely have a safe buffer of gold. (the whole running around in a useless map does not help) So I did'nt dare to get the Crystal Crucible.

In the end I figured I could use it in the event and by mid way through the event i felt safe enough to commit my resources to the CC.

One of the biggest mistakes I made in the Fungal Cavern was to convert all my minerals into Mineral cheese. I HAZ ONE THOUSAND PLUS mineral cheese!!! Oh well.

So ya. I had to redo alot of the work previously done in Fungal Cavern.

Anyways after i got the Crucible I started farming for Glowing Gruyere in Fungal Cavern. I think I was at it for about a week. Then I read in the forum that it is a bit slow. And that I was better off farming for GG (glowing gruyere) in the Labyrinth or Zokor. Sighs.

Anyways I was at about 75 GG. So off I went to the Labyrinth.

I will be posting more pics and tips. Later....

But I guess I should say something useful :P now.

Ermmm. I also read somewhere, that one should only use the GG in Zokor. The reason being that the Stalker attraction difference (between using GG and "whatever" cheese) is quite small (the usual FTA differences still apply tho!). And its better to save the GG for Zokor, where the prizes are better and a stalker FTC is more painful. Given that I had only 75 GG, this was good advice!

Other useful tips:
- Also try to go as naturally as possible.
- Go for any treasury corridors
- Farming corridors are also good

My resource usage in terms of priority:

In farming or treasure corrridors, use better charms. (I used SB+ and ancient, in other corridors my go to charm is chrome).

In corrrdors I am uninterested in, I use Gouda and tarnish charm,

In corrdors I am interested in I use gouda and Chrome charm

Oil only in corridors you are interested in. Just to give a headstart in accumulating clues of the desired type.

For my first run I was lucky enought to get quite a bit of treasure corridors and i oiled those.

Anyways more details tomorrow. It is 2 am here!!!

Happy Hunting!!!!

The Iceberg

Its weird.

I am now trying to catch the Deep Mouse, and it is only because of a map. I guess I never really liked the Iceberg. Perhaps it was too much like the old Mythmonger game where it was mostly grinding down.

Anyways i probably should do a guide and this will be the placeholder for it.

Meanwhile, I will now post about my very first attempt to catch the darn Deep Mouse!!!

I don't think I am actually at the Icewing lair yet.... but i have armed my Deep Freeze base anywasy :)

[20150819 23:06]

I dunno what happen , But I totally whiffed on catching the Deep mouse!!! Anyways on ward with the map!!! I will update this as a guide later on after I get the L.E. trap in the season 3 chest.... which might take awhile :p

[20150819 23:07]

Wow. Oh wow. Did it really take awhile =)

Anyways, in running a few maps and always going for the more unpopular groups of mice (hint: this area is one of em')

I tried to get the Deep mouse a  few times and always come up short... I mean I don't even have a whiff of the darn thing. So I figured I must be doing something wrong.

All the while I just thought that I had to hunt with the Beep freeze base and thats it.

Apparently the Deep mouse is only available under very specific conditions and that is:

1) You gotta catch the Icewing mouse  before hunt # 250 with the Deep Freeze base, after which the "Deep lair" will be where the Deep mouse is available

Well hmmm thats just one condition :)

interestingly, the Deep Lair lasts for 200 feet. And at the end of 200 feet, the Deep Mouse is the only thing that can be attracted.

This means a few things.

If you can somehow catch the Icewing before hunt # 250 with a good distance (more than 200), you are actually in a  very good position to catch the Deep mouse!!!

However. How to reach this nirvana?

...

I dunno.

But.

I will attempt this:

Use the stage based bases. i.e.

1) Magnet Base (Treacherous Tunnels)
2) Spiked Base (Brutal Bulwark)
2) Remote Detonator Base (Bombing Run)
4) Heartstone base (Mad Depths)

For charms, I think I got the impression that it was Wax Charm for the bombing run and Sticky everywhere else.... I think :p

I also got the impression that if you got the SOS, the base for Mad Depths does not really matter?

I guess this is the best way to get an optimum run.

Oh and of course. If you want the absolute best run. SB+ !!!

Still I had the impression that catching the Deep Mouse is doable with gouda, but you might need to do a few times and get lucky. I think.

I can;t really test because this is'nt my favourite area :p and darn... the Labyrinth is Open!!!!!

Yah.

Sighs. I was really farming stuff in the Fungal Garden... but I got sucked into a non responsive map... :/

Oh well.

Happy Hunting ppl :)

Thoughts on Legacy 20150807

Now Legacy is a format I have been following for quite a while.

Ever since it was created.

Back then Faerie Stompy was a thing. And my! a 50 USD card (the 3 mana 4/4 portal card whose name eludes me) was a big thing at that time (circa 2004? I think). And there were other decks like Red Death, which was a R/B stompy if you like.

Then later some decks started establishing themselves. Gobbos with ports (whose name also eludes me) from mercadian masques. Thresh decks. And things like Spanish Inquisition (I might be messing this up with Vintage??).

Gobbos pretty much died slowly but surely after Tarmo replaced erm Werebear. And you got the current Canadian Thresh getting firmed up.

These past few years have been a little more roller coasterly as in the past decade or past five years, a new factor came into the picture. Well two factors.

1) SCG coverage
2) The cumulation of several years maybe even decade? old practice of powering up creatures and neutering spells

4 x Shivan Reef
4 x Temple of Epiphany
5 x Island
7 x Mountain

This is just a pile I threw together.

I like it quite a bit. I started with trying to build a goblin deck with Goblin Piledrivers, but I did it with some insight gleaned from trying to build a modern version (that one did't end too well, Gobbos are just a little weak right now), so I know just  relying on the Goblin tribe is unlikely to be tenable.

My other indulgence is with Thopter Spy Network! I like the card from the onset, it was the first card I open (I think, it might have been a prize pack???)

I dunno I kept opening it, and then I saw it in the coverage and I built a Bant modern deck.... so again i had a bit of experience from tinkering with it.

And...

I liked it! Thopter Spy Network is actually the new Bident of Thassa, it is a little better as a kill condition though. You just need to add enough support artifacts.

So I decided to supplement the Goblin assault with the nefarious Thopters!

The dragons are just nice, its good to have eyes in the skies no?

On a more practical note, the dragons go deep while the Goblins and Thopters go wide.

Have fun!

Furoma Run 2015

Well... this is'nt technicall a full run, since you you start at the

1. Training Grounds
2, Dojo
3. Meditation Room
4. Pinnacle Chamber

....

Actually come to think of it I think the Training Grounds is skippable. Only for getting supplies. Hmmm.

So scratch that I kinda doing a full run :)

This is my current setup:

So when should you do a Furoma run?

Some things might have changed since Furoma first came out. Catch rates for the kitty seems lower for instance (There was a time when catching Mojo was extremely easy). Also i think the returns for the epic? orbs or is it Divine orbs? Are lower these days.

Still, Furoma is the best area for gold farming last I heard. If you do not have the kitty (Sphyx Wrath) you can still attempt if you have at least a trap better or equal Rewer's Riposte. (This may or may not be correct since, like i said they adjust catch rates, my experience are all from memory... alas! I is old fart)

If not, or if you found out that traps rates have been adjusted such that only the kitty is viable, so worries! Another area that is great for farming gold (as a rough guide it is profitable for Lord rank and below) are the Trains in Varmin Valley

Anyways this is just to track my current run

my gold is currently at about 1 mil, after buying lots of orbs.... no reason, I just thought they were cheap... I probably should'nt have done that with halloween so close :p

Happy Hunting ppl!

[20150802 11:10]

Hmmm reading the forums, it would appear that the B-Rift and W-Rift are pretty good for gold too. Althought someone mentioned that if I wanted piles of gold but no points, Furoma is good.

Now I don't know if that means Furoma is still top dog for gold only. If so then I would still hunt here, but if not I might be better off in B-Rift or W-Rift.

I could just go to the Horntracker I guess, but I think I will stick it out and do my Furoma runs for now :p

Maybe once I hit a substantial amount of gold then I will run off to B-Rift and W-Rift to get my points up!

[20150802 11:55]

Unfortunately i am easily distracted I am now actually back on the Treasure Chest hunt!

The map had only one mouse left and it was something I was kinda positioned to catch? So I decided why not?

Will be back on to Furoma after this!

[20150802 20:03]

Alrighty! Back in the Dojo!
