A Magical Huffalump Resides Here

My name is Ed, I am a programmer. Just another dude with another blog. I like MTG, Open Source (more towards FREE software). I like sports, and eventually I hope to do business and do good for the world in general. This blog is gonna be about Magic The Gathering. Decklists and snippets will be posted here. It may lead somewhere or nowhere, as with all things arcane, that was bloody obvious =)

Yes Energy is not the problem! And neither is Copter!

Just a shout out to this article by craig wescoe

I fully agree with him.

Hell I would support anything that powers up standard :)

I think Energy is at the right level of power. I think Emrakul, the Promised End was fair, yes seriously. What was lacking is the proper removal or competing strategies.

There is a fallacy that the only way a "broken" situation can happen is when a card is broken.

The truth is that sometimes the card is broken. Sometimes it is the ENVIRONMENT that is broken. Its really two sides of the same coin, or a matter of perspective if you like. My take is standard and modern are too weak. I would like a more powerful baseline. (but thats WOTC's decision to make... but myself? I like a powerful standard at least, if not Modern - I can still deal with the current power level of Modern.. but Standard? Only Kaladesh block and Oath  was good... the rest is mostly toilet paper)

The thing is I like a higher powered standard as it give my cards better LONGEVITY. Why? Because Modern. Because Eternal. You hate masters set? You hate paying through your nose for older expensive cards? Well guess what. part of the reason is that your standard cards that rotate every 1 or 2 years are not up to scratch.

So stop hating power level. Power creep is a problem for WOTC/Hasbro to settle. Not the the players. Not you and me. Power damping makes toilet paper out of your cards. Remember that :)

True, going completely crazy with increasing power is not good since if everyone is superman no body is super right? And then things get boring and people leave, orsomething like that. Well there are a few problems with that thought.

1) We are so far from that stage. Power damping (or the dumbing down of Magic) has been going on for more than a decade now... so no... Energy is not going to kill anything soon. Hell i would say Modern even after all its bannings almost contained Eldrazi Winter (which was the most exciting time of Modern for me).

2) In fact we are more like the villian in the cartoon Incredibles, where the villian takes out all the superheroes, so that if no one is super, then no one is special (something like that) i.e. dumb down everything so that NOTHING stands out. Standard has been this middling mid range mudhole for the longest time because of this stand.

3) Even if we go crazy and make everything powerful. Guess what WOTC has not been shy with that ginormous BANHAMMER!! So it is really not an issue. (It would kill that money maker of the masters series however)

No I don't want WOTC to go crazy and power up everything. (Since it might accidentally invalidate all the powerful strategies in Eternal and make my old cards valueless oops). But hey throw us a bone so that at the very least as we continue to trudge through year after year of standard we get to compete in Eternal.

And when we get a good effect like Energy. I say we (as players) cherish it and make it work. Instead of trying to ban it out of existence.... I mean unless you have a fetish for toilet paper, be my guest.

[edit] Oh and I think Craig's idea of pushing the hate for powerful strategies in standard is sound. In fact the part where I disagree is that I am fine with the "extreme" hosers he mentioned e.g. flashfires. I think those are fine too, you just need to calibrate it to the threat. And not just the threat, but things that can circumvent the hosers. Like ... not all hosers were exactly powerful.. especially when they are out paced, or don't reach the board in time... if they even reach the board etc.... so it is all contextual. (oh look there it is again, its the environment that is the problem ;) )

New Pokemon go gym updates evaluation

First off i guess i should profile myself a  bit so you know where i am coming from.

I am valor in a mystic infested area. Yes infested. It is meant to be negative because thats the feeling the current gyms evoke. Replace with which ever colour you are currently a minority team in.

In the old system i get about 10-20 gold daily, so i am not hard core into coin collection or anything. I take down level 10 blissey infested towers weekly (other days i look for easier targets :p) and even that is preferable to the current system.

The current system favours whomever is resident near the gym. I mean like literally. Since now you do not collect your gold one time and be done but are instead gettiing reward based on the amount of time defended, then means tbere is a 24/7 interest in attacking an opposing gym. As opposed to previously once you collected you are no longer incentivised to attack.

The immediate 6 slots are both empowerig as well as toxic. It enciurages the casuals who previously have tp prestiege to literally fight for a slot. Essentially there is no cost to entering a gym once it is won by someone else. How is this relevant? Again it encourages a winning by numbers system, when you are a minority team you are severely disadvantaged. Its almost bullying really. I look ard me, yellow and red time get a gym and lose it in 10 to 20 mins. Simply due to numbers. Previously whe you had to pretiege and with the time out yku see all teams having a chance to take gyms and get rewarded. Now its really just who has the larger numbers based on who lives there. I have given up, at first i have adjusted my thinking, i could just feed ant pokemon in gyms to get candy. So no gold, but at least theres candy. But today they have disabled that as well. You can no longer feed other teams pokemon. That is sad. That mean a a minority team i have ZERO incentive. I am just a reset button for the majority team. This is a stupid update. Raids are cool tho, i have already got my fast and charge tm so thats cool .

Poll for Magic Players

Poll here https://www.research.net/r/mtg-motivations

The last question is most important since its free text :) below is what I wrote:

"I like old style magic, fast mana, discard, counters, efficient LD, wrath of god style cards, armegeddon etc etc. I like the up tick in creature power. I think it is matching up to the old cards. But thats the problem, you nerfed the old cards. So now the imbalance is from creatures rather than from stack based or prison or LD cards. I would like a return to make stack based interaction important. An also I would like for you to stop talking about interaction like it makes any sense. 1) The game is to end your opponent's interaction. That is inevitable. Saying decks like combo and LD are non interactive is disingenuous, they are interactive it is just that they and the pokemon players are interacting on different axis ~ hence it is a lie that such decks are non-interactive. If there is a situation that one deck is non-interactive in a duel, it is because both decks are guilty of it. Why did the mid-range pokemon deck not play more stack based effects that can deal with counters, or mitigate discard or LD or play cards that can break the prison locks. All those interactive ways of playing you have removed from magic slowly over the last decade (that I have just mentioned), bring them back. And you would make magic awesome again. Again, its not that powerful creatures are not good, its just that you made everything else suck for the longest time. I am planning to write my thoughts  in a more concrete way on what I think is wrong with magic on my blog, search for huffalump magic. I have'nt written it yet, but you can watch out for it if you wish :) I love magic and I want it to succeed, but it is getting exceedingly expensive paying for stuff that loses almost all its value in 1 year. This is becoming more so in recent years. And no, weakening the environment further (aka frontier format) is not going to help, thats just kicking the can down the road and it may not even work."

I write more later if I remember.... lol
