A Magical Huffalump Resides Here

My name is Ed, I am a programmer. Just another dude with another blog. I like MTG, Open Source (more towards FREE software). I like sports, and eventually I hope to do business and do good for the world in general. This blog is gonna be about Magic The Gathering. Decklists and snippets will be posted here. It may lead somewhere or nowhere, as with all things arcane, that was bloody obvious =)

Prismatic Mounts

Prismatic Mount

This is a just a variant casual play format.

Rules are fairly simple.

You take a pile (the key is it must really be a random pile) of about 100 cards.

This is the main library.

You have five stacks of land.

These will be known as the "Prismatic Mountains"

Gameplay is as per a dual (though you can have more players)

You do not draw an opening hand.

Each turn you draw a card off the main library and then draw a land of your choice.

This is true for the first five turns.

Beyond that, you must choose to either draw from the main library or the Prismatic mountains.

There is some merit to this, drawing a card a turn means the first five turns, will tell your opponent the colours you are veering towards. As well as not get mana screwed.

To add more twists.

Once you have emptied a Prismatic mountain (say forest), you could do one of the following:

1) Castling - You take half the Main Library and put it in the void where te forst pile once was.

This is your personal library, your opponent cannot draw from this library. Yup it means potentially you can deck your opponent.

2) You can invoke an avatar.

This avatar must be a permanent.

It cannot be destroyed, or rather it can but will "respawn" the next turn.

(The only way to get rid of it is to RFG)

To invoke an avatar, you must have the requisite mana to hard cast it.

I.e. say your avatar is Reya Dawn Bringer, then you must have 6WWW in the lands you have in play.

You do not have to cast it. The moment you create a "void Prismatic mount", you can put it in play.

Other rules:

Tokens are creature cards.

If you draw a token card you can just put it in play.

All players start with 100 life points.

This lead to very strange "mounts" for instance a pile of Dragon Tokens means a deck that has 1 Dragon T1, 2 Dragons T2 and so on...

Oh yes you can play pile against pile, it just means now the libraries are separate rather than one main =)

I played this as I was lazy to sort the piles from 10th, but this can be done with any old piles you have lying around as well =)

10th actual has alot of fun effects, like Ambassador Laquatus, Verdant Forces etc.. the 100 life points ensure that you do not get killed too quickly. Normally a 5/5 Token dragon that pops out from nowhere can be debilitating and game ending in a mere few turns.

With a 100 lifepoints, 5/5s or 7/7s are strong (actually still very strong), but it does give you some time to find an answer or your own threat.

Have fun!

Gobbos Zombies and Dwagons!!!!!!!!!!!!

my Yosei, Kokusho and Sliver Overlord as well as 10 goblin and Zombie tokens just came in.

The goblins and Zombies were MINTY, but the Sliver Overlords were EX only though touted as MINT *sighz*

Fortunately Kokusho was about NM- so its not too bad.

Yosei was MINTY!

Yesterday 2 Sliver Queens came in, earlier another two came in. The earlier two were Ex to Ex- though touted as NM. but the ones that came yesterday were NM and Ex as stated in the ebay listing.

Sighz... ebay is pretty risky. Still it was'nt too bad.

This breaks my heart

Yeah it really does, though.....

Can I tap Lotus Vale for mana before I sacrifice the two lands?

No. You must deal with a card's coming-into-play cost before you may activate any of its abilities.

All it means is that they are following intended functionality, which never did hold too much water.

Here is hoping that one day the vales will be the one shot lotuses that they are.

For now though, they will be very expensive and "you better darn well know what you are doing" lands.

Magic Academy

This is WOTC's column to initiate novices into the game.

The link is to the last article of the series which nicely compiles all the articles into a single page, as such i thought it worthy of being pemalinked =)

++what follows is Blog stuff.. boring inane and pointless++

Oh I bought 3 packs today. Early in the morn, after my meeting with project mates and when i reached home.

The first pack yielded Shunt (ewww)

The second pack yielded Platinum Angel (yay)

The third pack yielded Verdant Force (WOOT)

Now Verdant Force is a little old nowadays and has yet to find a nice niche for itself, but it is a cool casual and may yet be a FORCE in constructed. So it was'nt a bad pull for the day =)
